Via the InsideGoogle blog is a Google video of people driving exactly at the speed limit and annoying everyone. Watch towards the end where they come over the rise of the hill. Reminds me of Convoy. This could easily be done in Ireland. 🙂

No it couldn’t.. You’d tell people to go 50kmph and they’d do 70!
Or maybe I’m tired of driving along the Commons Road and being overtaken by people breaking the speed limit and not being caught because the Gardai don’t come out when it’s raining.
Speed limits do have a real function. As the speed your travel at increases the damage you are likely to inflict increases at asquared rate to the speed. See the physics equations for more details.
That means that for a twofold increase in speed, the kinetic energy will increase by a factor of four; for a threefold increase in speed, the kinetic energy will increase by a factor of nine; and for a fourfold increase in speed, the kinetic energy will increase by a factor of sixteen.
This is serious stuff. However in environments where the speed can be kept constant and hazards are essentially non-existent (e.g. motorways) a lower speed limit makes little sense and the 55 mph speed limit in the US is a bit bonkers.
Idiots, the guys on the outside lanes are breaking the law. If they aren’t overtaking people then they can’t be in those lanes. It’s not their job to enforce the speed limits.
I could be wrong but does that law exist in the US? Can’t you overtake in any lane?
