Via Metafilter. Two FX firms worked on redoing the FX for the original Star Trek series. They were both told they can fiddle with the fx but not the story of certain scenes from an episode called “The Doomsday Machine”. This is what they did:
Take 1
Take 2
Trek fans are exploding all around the world as this is being watched. So pass it on.
First one too cartoonish second one very good. Time will tell
I definatly agree. To add one thing for the first video, the impulse engines shouldn’t emit flames.
The redone Fx are better from a technological point of view, but…
The original Star Trek series was succesful BECAUSE a special atmosphere was achived with very little high tech. Call it retro, call it nostalgia.
This is a RIP Van Winkle kinda thing: Star Trek is being pulled from its own time (bye nostalgia) and warped (sic!) into the computer age, and not at home in either.
Probably a photograph would have depicted the lady better, but would it still be the Mona Lisa?
Let’s use all the computer FX in the newer Star Trek series (who are good too) but leave THE ORIGINAL in peace.

Jacob, you are full of shit.
Jeff you’re right. Star Trek has always been a view of what our future could be like. The advancement of technology has always played a big part in Star Trek, so I can think of no better place to apply new thecnology
