The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new – Fluffy Links September 25th 2006

You can now print your own stamps in the UK. When will An Post come out with something like this or are they afraid this measure would mean another nail in the coffin of rural post offices?

Belgian News sources win a case against Google, preventing their news being shown on Google News. Google were forced to display the judgement on the Google.be websites. Google went one step further and interpreted the ruling to remove every reference to all newspaper sites. Now you won’t find any links to these Belgian news sites on Google. Can a commercial website live without being listed on Google?

A ring that reminds you of your wedding anniversary. Sad.

On the same topic. Will Paddy Power do this next? Bet on when your friends marriages will break up.

Who Called Us. Handy website to list the companies that deliberately leave missed calls so you call them back and hear some marketing crap. One for Ireland would be nice.

Rahzel – If your mother only knew(Live). Bjork used this vocal percussionist for her album Medúlla.

Demotivator. Make your own motivation style posters.

A blender alarm clock. Blender starts at a programmed time. This would certainly be annoying enough to get me out of bed but I’m sure it’d last two days at most before meeting the wall at high speed.

Italian bloggers are now being invited to politcal events.

The Cornell Note-taking system. For everyone going or going back to college.

Why they wouldn’t allow me to be a fighter pilot.

Ireland 31st in Digital Opportunity Index

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Ireland doesn’t even feature on the ITU’s Information Society’s Digital Opportunity Index Chart. We’re 31st!

WISR

What’s the DOI?

The Digital Opportunity Index evaluates the opportunity, infrastructure and utilization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for 180 economies worldwide. The Index monitors the mobile communications that promise to bridge the digital divide in many parts of the world, as well as more recent technologies such as broadband and mobile Internet access.

Seems we suck overall for ICT, not just broadband.

“Blogging the Election” – Sponsor Details and Registration details

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Planning for the “Blogging the Election” conference is going well. We have two confirmed sponsors so far. They being Technofutures.ie and Digiweb. Digiweb are the catering sponsor. We still need a fair few sponsors to cover all the costs. If you know of any that might be interested then let them know.

We now need people to register that they are going to go. You can register here. We have room for about 150 people and I have a feeling that spaces are going to fill fast.

The Sunday Business Post had a piece on the conference today too.

Sometimes, when you fall, you fly

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

“You know what happens when you dream of falling? Sometimes you wake up. Sometimes the fall kills you. And sometimes, when you fall, you fly.”

Sugarcubes Reunion!

Via the Bjork site is news that the Sugarcubes are having a reunion gig on November 17th in Iceland. Iceland Air has a special deal from the UK for this gig. £299 for flights, hotel stay and tickets to the concert. Shame I have no more days off this year or I’d be going.

Sugarcubes – Birthday

See topless people in Google Earth! Another great find by the Internet nerds.

Redbull brings out a drink called Cocaine?

They say a high hits you within five minutes, followed by a caffeine boost 15 minutes later. But hold on—the ride lasts five hours and the concoction is “350 percent stronger than Red Bull,” they claim.

But will it be sold per gram?

Creating timelines with Excel.
Handy.

Probably old to some but I was sent this recently. The Bush beatbox:

Walter Murch – Damn

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Via Metafilter are links to Walter Murch’s work. He’s the guy that edited Apocalypse Now, The Talented Mr. Ripley and Jarhead and was a sound supervisor on the Godfather.

Opening of Apocalypse Now. Coppola, Sheen, the Doors and lots of napalm. Oh yeah. Play it again and again.

Baptism scene from the Godfather which was edited by Peter Zinner:

People are landing on this site for pics of today’s fire in Cork.

Have a look at Despod’s photos and also this one of a tug. Donncha also has photos. Julian has photos too.

I got these pics via someone in Apple. I don’t know your name but will give attribution when I get your details.

Via Tom Coates comes details about Moo Flickr Cards. Choose your favourite Flickr pics. Make 100 different cards for $19.99. Add your personal details on the back. Now I wish I had a Flickr account. I wonder would Treasa and Ryan be interested in making business cards for me?

Remember Remember the 7th of October – Guido Fawkes to give a talk at “Blogging the Election”

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Guido FawkesGuido Fawkes is coming to the “Blogging the Election” conference on October 7th.

Guido and his peers have changed UK Politics. They stuck with stories the press gave up on and forced them back into the spotlight, they uncovered new scandals and they fact-checked the hell out of the media and politicians. They’re that annoying guy in work that says “Actually that’s not the case”. They may annoy a load of people but everyone knows they’re correct. I wonder how many spin doctors now fret about this new breed? Their influence seems to be growing too.

A quote from Guido in reply to one of the begrudgers:

Go to the Oxford Union and ask our future political class who they read more often – the Times’ Peter Riddell or Guido Fawkes’ blog? Next ask them who they trust more? It is no contest. With 200,000 hits a month and rising, my politics blog is more trusted than the Times’ pompous political columnist.

Having Guido at the blogging conference should be educational and fun. Now if we could get some sponsors … 🙂
