Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the greatest SEO of them all?

Competition time! Are you the best SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) person in Ireland? Want to prove it? Via the Irish Web Awards vehicle, we’re running another competition to see who’s the best at SEO in Ireland.

You have until December 1st at 3pm to rank your website for the following phrase: geansai gorm. Yup, we’re using a phrase as gaelige in order as as not to pollute the indices as much as possible.

Criteria:

  • Entries open to all Irish individuals and Irish businesses.
  • Search is to be performed on google.ie. Without Pages From Ireland selected, with personalisation off and from an Irish IP address.
  • The domain to rank must be a new domain. Must not contain the keywords in the domain name at all and no ccTLD domains are to be used.
  • Only want the homepage to rank, not other non-useful pages.
  • 301 redirects are not permitted.
  • Keywords as gaeilge instead of english but copy can be in English

Edit: Forgot to say a big thanks to both Cormac and Richard for their feedback about this idea.

  16. ggwinner dot com says:

I think everybody involved in GG contest is following the thread you’re talking about

  17. MsbCentral says:

I can’t believe I got my own stalker

  18. Louie says:

I think everyone that is part of the GG contest is a stalker and in-turn has a stalker/s, so is not surprising at all…

  19. MsbCentral says:

    All in good form too!

But having one of the guys who made up the rules as a stalker makes me feel priveleged.

I just queried that Damien hadn’t mentioned that the Ad needs to be organic.

So I just want to apologise to everyone for that – it’s clearly upset someone very deeply. For some reason.

  20. MsbCentral says:

Oops! I meant to say that the winner needs to be organic!

Just giving credit to Keith Shirley for his AdWords.

I know it’s an seo competition. I dont use AdWords myself and I’ve often queried about other “SEO” companies who use adwords only (i.e. have no SERP’s themselves at all) – but this has caused someone affiliated with the competition to, um, take a personal hunt into my professional career. I really dont think this it the platform for it nor is it fair but I wont be stooping to that level

  21. Cormac says:

When a competition for something as transparent as SEO is created, each entrants’ activities are going to be scrutinised to a certain extent. In my case I publicly called you out as you clearly spammed many sites to gain an improper ranking in the SERPS.

Was I wrong it do this? No. Because since my forum posts you have admitted to spamming.

If you believe yourself to be a proper SEO then that’s your opinion. It’s not one I share with you.

  22. MsbCentral says:

I didn’t spam any of your forum posts. I never claimed you spammed anyone. I said I was using many techniques as used by the competitors

I’ve never uploaded a Youtube video for SEO before – I just did it because other people were and I saw something funny about it.

Go ahead and call me a spammer, but then call everyone who is a spammer one. You’re affiliated with this competition, you can’t be seen to single out people.

You don’t have to share my opinion. Nobody asked you. But it’s not for you to decide, and you’ve been asked by V7N members to stop there too.

  23. Kae Verens says:

Cormac, I’m very anti-spam myself, but the rules do not mention anything about ethics.

I’ve stopped playing the game myself because I don’t have the time, resources or specialist knowledge to get to the top, but it seems to me that “spamming” is one tactic that just might work. Maybe next year’s competition (if there is one) will be more specific on that topic, but it’s not in the rules this year.

  24. Kae Verens says:

speaking of tactics – it would be great if the top ‘x’ winners could be asked after the game finishes, what tricks did they use. That would make an interesting article.

  25. MSBCentral says:

There should be like a blog for this and the winner gets to post to it for a year, then the following year the next winner.

  26. Louie says:

    @Kae – I don’t see that happening… 🙂
You are asking for the “Italian Job” plan of action to be reveal to public … 😉

  27. Cormac says:

@Kae – I’m going to do that. I started with two posts when I first created my entry but I haven’t had time to publish any posts since then as I have been busy. You can follow the activities here in the coming days/weeks.

  28. MSBCentral says:

For the record, I’m very against spam myslef .. and won’t be using it commercially either. But when I saw the spam being created by the other competitors, I thought it would worth having a look.

  29. Dara says:

Damien-can you clarify one point that effects the current rankings with less than 36 hours to run-will capital lettering or small lettering as in Geansai Gorm or geansai gorm be used as the determining factor? I think its very unusual to have 2 different results based on this under normal circumstances but as I see it now there is a slight but important difference.

  30. Dara says:

Or will it be Geansai gorm-again this makes a difference as serps currently stand so just curious.
    Thanks
